Ice Fishing in Maine

Ice Fishing in Maine can be one of the most relaxing, fun but often cold outdoor activities during the winter months. But it will cure your craving for the love of fishing while your waiting for open water.

One of the great things about ice fishing, is that you can get to those hard to reach fishing spots without the need of a boat. And you can get to those great little secluded ponds with the help of a snowmobile.

However, There are certain things you must be aware of before heading out after that trophy Lake Trout.

Make sure you get the laws pertaining to the body of water your going to be fishing. Generally the laws are the same as open water season but not always.

Be sure of the ice!  This is without a doubt the most critical thing to know while ice fishing. Make a few “test” holes close to shore to check the thickness of the ice.  A safe start is at least 6-8 inches of good solid ice.

( DO NOT EVER take a vehicle out on the ice at this minimal thickness)

And even if your returning to the same spot you ice fished last week, if the weather has been warm or rainy. Redo a few test holes before you get out to your spot.

It’s also good practice to get maps of the body of water your planning on fishing. It’s good to know where the spring holes and inlets and outlets are.

The ice is always thinner at those spots.

Always go ice fishing with a friend, the buddy system. This is for two reasons.

1. a safety precaution.

2. It’s so much more enjoyable having someone there to share the experience.
