I haven’t wrote on my blog since this past spring, but that does not mean I haven’t been out in the great outdoors of Maine. this summer I was fortunate enough to go to Greenville Maine and check out Little Moose Mountain.
The original plan was to climb Big Moose Mountain and check out the old fire tower, .But that didn’t happen.
We went past the trail head for Big Moose and we ended up finding the trail head for Little Moose.
We took off down the trail around 2 in the afternoon. We had realized that we would not have enough time to go over to the Trail Head for Big Moose and enjoy the climb to the fire tower but we figured we had plenty of time to make the loop hike.
Now let me explain about Little moose Mountain trail. It is not really a trail that will go to the top of one mountain. it is a trail that goes along a series of ranges. There are a few places along the trail where it is a steep incline but over all it is an easy trail.
The map drawing that we picked up at the trail head was poorly drawn and very deceiving. I give a high grade for the upkeep of the park that is done by the park rangers, they keep the trails clear of fallen trees and the campsites looking good and tidy. However, I give the state a failing grade on their map making skills of the area.
i will say that the trails are well marked and there are signs up at all intersections. just the map gives the illusion that the trails between intersections are shorter.
Our hike started out with a clear sky and warm temps. That changed however about half way thru our hike.
About half way around the loop is a place where you can walk out onto a big rock and the view is spectacular (unless it is stormy rain like when we got to it) On a clear day you can see for miles and see Borestone Mountain and Mt. Katahdin at the same time.
As mentioned a little bit before, there are camp sites scattered out along the ponds that are laying by the trail. These sites are fairly big but basically only for one group each. they are hike in only, so you would have to leave your camper trailer at home and backpack it in. There are no “beaches” at the campsites and when we hiked the trail I noticed that every site had a jon boat but I didn’t notice any paddles.
You are allowed to carry a boat or a canoe in and leave it for a few days. But as stated on the park information paper any item left there for 15 days becomes property of the park.
I plan on doing the hike again when it isn’t a stormy day and take my camera along.
If you have hike Little Moose, Leave a comment and tell me what you thought of it.
