The other day I decided I would hike into Little Wilson Stream Falls. After all, it is located in the same area as Borestone Mountain and Onawa Trestle.
I didn’t go alone. I have been to the Falls many times and wanted to share the experience with a few that have never been. I guess you could have considered me a “tour guide” lol. The weather was nice when we reached the end of the dirt road that goes up along Little Wilson stream from the Elliotsville road. Well, I say nice. It was a little overcast and the air was warm and humid, but it was not raining.
I generally walk up along the stream bed stepping from rock to rock. But with all the recent rainfall we have had, the water was high and the currents were fast. Plus the rocks that were still reachable to step on were very wet and slippery making them a very dangerous path to follow.
So we stuck to the dirt path that cuts it’s way up away from the stream and works it’s way towards the Appalachian Trail. Once it connects to the Appalachian trail, it follows it to the Falls.
The trail does not offer as much beautiful scenery as walking up the stream bed but considering the conditions of the stream and rocks, it was much safer.
Many people follow the trail to the falls, as well as some of the hikers on the Appalachian Trail will follow the trail to the parking lot were they will meet up with rides into Monson Maine for supplies. With all the traffic the trail receives it becomes a very easy trail to follow. The path is beaten down to the ground with little to no growth of moss or grass or even fallen leaves.
The trail is bordered by mainly Pine,Ceder,Spruce trees as well as Maples and White Birches. Of course there are other species of trees but those are the majority.
On the day we went, the trails were over abundant with mushrooms. Due to the recent wet weather and the shade the canopy of evergreens provide, the conditions were ideal for the mushrooms.
I stopped and took many pictures of different types of mushrooms on the walk in. You can find the pictures of mushrooms in the mushroom photo album which is located on the photo album page of this site. The Black Fly Photo Album
We could hear thunder off in the distance just about 5 minutes before we made it to the falls. We knew what was coming but we was hoping to see the falls before the rain came. However, we was not that lucky. Just as we reached the falls, the sky opened up and buckets of rain started coming down.
We still was able to see and enjoy the falls, just not as long as we wanted to. I originally wanted to go to the base of the falls so I could get picture of the whole falls from top to bottom. However, I did not do that due to safety reasons.
Luckily the tree growth is so thick, that it cut down the actual amount of rain that landed on us. Well, that is untill someone wiggles or bumps the tree you are standing under. The tree “bumping” pretty much became a game on the walk out. Not that any of us could have gotten any wetter.
Awesome write-up. I know that area and I felt like I was on this journey with you. Perhaps next time you and your group go, it will be ideal for you. Thank you for sharing.:D
Thanks guys, I just about lost it looking for this.
