Visit to Barrow’s Falls and back to Little Wilson Falls

I headed out yesterday for another trip to Little Wilson Falls. Since last trip I was not able to climb to the bottom to take a video of the whole falls like I wanted. This time I not only visited Little Wilson Falls, but I also went and checked out Barrow’s Falls in Abbot Maine.
Needless to say, the water is still to high to fully enjoy these places. You would think that a waterfall or a series of falls would be “bigger and badder” with more water, right? From what I have seen, more water only dampens the effects of some falls. Today’s trip showed me both extremes.

Little Wilson Falls is much more awe inspiring with more water rushing over the top. However, you can not get in certain places to view it because there is more water. ( you guessed it, I still was not able to get to the bottom)
Now when I went to Barrow’s Falls on the other hand, I was extremely disappointed. The water was so high that it “smoothed” out the series of small falls and looked like little series of rapids. Nothing really worthy of a picture. (I took some anyways)

The trip into Little Wilson Falls was nice, the air was dry and not humid, no rain, blue skies. I did not take as many pictures of mushrooms on this trip since I had pretty much covered them on the last time in. Which was not very long ago. Therefore, the trip into the falls was a lot quicker then last time.

In case you didn’t know, the Appalachian trail touches little Wilson Falls and then follows downstream for a short distance before crossing Little Wilson Stream. We met a few thru-hikers once we reached the falls. Above the falls is a great place for hikers to step into the water to cool off or give themselves a “wipe-off”. ( like a sponge bath but with out a sponge or soap)

Once there and saw I was not going to get the video or pictures I wanted, we headed back to the car. Time to go to Barrow’s Falls before it got to late.

Barrow’s Falls is located between Blanchard Me. and Abbott Me. The easiest way to get there is to go to Monson Me. then head towards Blanchard. Once you reach the intersection in Blanchard take a left and head towards Abbott. Once you come to a green steel bridge you are there. Barrow’s falls is located down stream from the bridge.

Do not expect a tall huge waterfall. Instead you will see a series of small falls or large rapids which have carved themselves though the ledges over thousands of years. You will see where there are some very deep pools of water that when looking at them, Make you feel like you are somewhere more exotic instead of central Maine.
