The other day I decided to see if I could find some whitewater action. Mind you, I am not interested in doing it myself. I wanted to find some place that was going to provide me with some good pictures and videos.
I had heard of Ripogenus Dam and wanted to see what kind of excitement the gorge below would offer anyone who dared to take the challenge.
To get to Ripogenus Dam, you must go to Millinocket Maine. There you drive towards Baxter State Park and turn onto the Golden Road. There is beautiful views of Mt. Katadin along the Golden Rd.
Here is one picture where the Golden Rd. Heads straight for Abol Trail.
After about an hour driving along the Golden Road, We came to a spot that looked promising. there were a few vehicles parked along side the road and we could hear rapids from the river.
Little did we know at the time, but we had found the cribworks rapids on the west branch of the Penobscot river. After talking to a few people standing on the boulders that lined the edge of rapids we knew we still had a chance to catch some possible great pictures and videos of some white water action.
We were only there for about 20 minutes when someone further upstream yelled “Kayak Comming!” I thought that was a very nice thing to do since alot of us would have never had a chance to get our cameras ready in time to take pictures. Those kayaks and rafts do not take long to zip by.
Below is a video I took of a kayak and some rafters. You will notice that durring the video I had moved upstream a few hundred yards to a series of rapids called Trouble Maker Rapids.
Here is a still shot of a raft hitting head on into a huge wave.
After the rafters went by, we continued our way up to Ripogenus Dam.
Was quite a sight. Here is a picture I took standing on the dam facing downstream.
